SES Solid State Data Recorder - Bulk Storage Range
The S3DR product family is a low cost, high performance, rugged solution to the data recording and processing needs of environmentally challenging embedded systems, such as those found in aerospace, defence, naval, vehicle and safety-related industrial applications.

The S3DR-B range is a specialisation of the generic product family, providing multiple, optional interface capabilities, while retaining minimum size and mass, operator front panel control and access to removable memory media from within a cockpit. Interface configurations are extensive, and can include for example, 2 channels of video with 4 channels of audio or 4 channels of Mil-Std 1553B. SES solid state Memory Cartridges are available in many sizes up to 256GB.
The units feature a high-speed recording function that is able to write data to removable memory media continuously at up to 160Mbps. Processing functions are provided by an Intel-compatible processor, allowing application specific data gathering regimes to be implemented, and the Active Front Panel allows substantial user interaction and monitoring of the recording.
The S3DR-B range can also be configured to be controlled using a subset of the commands from the remote control RCCM protocol defined in IRIG106-05 Chapter 6.
The range is complemented by the REVEAL data retrieval application - also available from SES - allowing synchronous display and analysis of multiple recorded data streams.
SES Solid State Data Recorder - Bulk Storage Range: Features
Maximum Configurability
The S3DR-B has been designed to permit tailoring to widely varied and demanding recording assignments. It shares with other members of the S3DR family a range of standard interfaces. In addition, an expanded version, the S3DR-BE, has the ability to accept expansion IP Modules, and if required, further custom expansion by means of an additional user-designed or user-specific PMC format interface PCB. The standard interfaces supported by S3DR-B are selected from:
- 1x IRIG-B Timecode Input or 1x IRIG-B Output
- 2x IRIG106 PCM High Speed Synchronous Serial
- 2x RS422/485/232 Rx/Tx
- 4x ARINC 429 Rx, 12.5kHz or 100kHz
- 1x 10/100/100 MBit Giga Ethernet
- 3x Discrete inputs, 1 Discrete output
The additional qualified interfaces supported by S3DR-BE can provide up to:
- 2x MPEG2 encoded video channels with 4x audio channels
- 4x Mil-Std 1553B Channels
Interactive Control and Monitoring
In S3DR-B and S3DR-BE, extensive user interaction is provided by its Active Front Panel (AFP).
The main monitoring functions are provided by a 16-character display module, showing application-specific information which is continually updated.
The percentage of total memory used is shown by default; alternatively the memory remaining unused and available for recording can be displayed. The SES AFP design permits extremely flexible monitoring, implemented using the display module, together with eight positive tactile push-button switches, and two green LEDs.
As standard, all displays can be dimmed under user control, using the push button switches.
Control functions, including Record, Stop and Event Mark, are available using the push button switches.
Further application-specific functions can be defined for selection by use of the Menu push button.
Where no interactive control and monitoring is required, the S3DR-B and S3DR-BE can be supplied with a loading door without an Active Front Panel. Instead, two green LEDS in the loading door provide user confirmation that the unit is operating correctly under remote control.

SES Multi-Channel Video and Data Recorder: Support
SES provide a number of optional support items to maximise the potential of the S3DR-MVDR platform, including:

REVEAL is a partner product to the S3DR-MVDR data recorder. It allows the user to extract and manipulate data from a removable memory cartridge and prepare the cartridge for reuse by the S3DR-MVDR. REVEAL is an application for Microsoft Windows that provides a wealth of features for extracting, interpreting, visualising and analysing data captured using an SES data recorder. Key features of the tool include:
- Convert data to a variety of formats to allow analysis with domain specific tools
- Interpret data to demultiplex or decommutate a data stream into its constituent parameters
- Archive data to hard disk, CD or DVD for later analysis or long term storage
- Visualisation of data to allow visual analysis within REVEAL using a framework that supports real-time and fast-time playback where suitable hardware is available
- Declassification of S3DR data storage media
- Annotation of recorded data with supplementary data, for example Form 725
The architecture of the application allows for easy customisation of the application to suit bespoke requirements, for example introduction of a new component to output data in a new format. Alternatively, the underlying components can be reused to provide a bespoke application to automate the extraction and processing of S3DR data cartridges.
